Keep All Your Passwords Secure with Ghost IT Support Essex

We’re not the first – and we won’t be the last – to emphasize the importance of cyber-safety. And while we can guarantee most of you will agree it’s importance, putting it into practice can be difficult for individuals around the globe.

According to latest reports, nearly 3 out of 4 individuals use duplicate passwords online; many of which have not been changed in five years or more. Unsurprisingly, about 40 percent of those taking part in the survey said they had experience a “security incident” in the past year – involving hacking, having passwords stolen or fraud.

With two out of every five people being hacked, it’s time to do something different i.e. changing your password!

After speaking to our in-house cyber security experts, here are 5 tips for keeping your passwords safe this year:

Avoid using personal information. It may be tempting to use the name of your pet or child as a password, but what if the hacker is someone a little closer to home? Often, a hacker could be someone who knows you – or has found out information from your Facebook. Therefore, using personal information such as names or dates will be their first guess.

Don’t use common passwords. Believe it or not, some of the most popular passwords are “123456”, “qwerty” and of course, “password”. Stay well away from these examples – if not you will have hackers leaping at the chance to get in your computer.

● Stay away from any single words or a pair of words. Hackers use software that can test every word in the dictionary for a short amount of time. Don’t think you can fool them with common substitutions such as a “5” for an “S”, hackers and their software are wise to any tricks.

● Try long passwords. American security research organisation, SANS Institute, recommend passwords that are at least 15 characters long. However, a password with 11 or 12 characters is sufficient for individuals looking to protect their important information.

Change your passwords often. Changing your passwords too regularly can make them difficult to remember but it’s important to change them occasionally. An easy way to keep track of when you changed your passwords last is to update them at the beginning or end of the year – and add this onto your password i.e. GsOgQlLoNqB522018

5 Security Tips for Your Business to Implement

Technology has become a convention of everyday life for many. But with an increased use of desktops, laptops and mobile devices, security awareness and implementation is crucial. There is no excuse for leaving the security of your business to chance, just follow these five security tips from the experts here at Ghost IT Services.

1 Implement Strong Passwords

Strong passwords are a quick and easy fix to improve the security of your devices.

To ensure that your password is secure avoid using any personal data like birthdates. Also, steer away from sequences of numbers that are close together. A combination of capital and lower case letters with numbers and symbols will make your password harder to crack.

2 Back-up Your Devices

Backing-up your services weekly onto an external hard drive or the cloud will ensure that your data is stored and cannot be lost. Incremental back-ups each night will provide a security copy that contains the files which have been altered since the last full backup. Ghost IT Services are experts on cloud services so your devices will be in safe hands.

3 Install Anti-Virus

An essential for online security, anti-virus software works as a line of defence against any attempts on attacking your network. You can rely on Ghost IT services to efficiently install and update anti-virus software for your work devices.

4 Put Up a Firewall

Whatever the size of your network, corporate or small, both have the same security issues. A software firewall will block and protect any unauthorized attempts on entering your network. The typical understanding of a firewall is that it works as a complete block, however it is more of a filter that is controlled by an access control list.

5 Inform Employees

Informing employees of the security measures that will be introduced and encouraging safe online habits can work as a further prevention method for any threats on your network. Just ask the experts of Ghost IT for any more information on security tips.

IT Support for Small Businesses

What technology may or may not mean for the future has always been something of a contentious subject. A scant few decades ago, while the very idea of a computer in every home was something out of science fiction, received wisdom was still that advantages in technology would lead to more leisure time as the “robots” did all the onerous jobs we didn’t want to do ourselves. Of course, this latter prediction has singularly failed to come to pass, but in terms of personal computing, in an age in which increasing numbers of people are bypassing the home computer stage entirely and there is instead a computer in every hand, pocket and car, our reliance on computer technology has increased exponentially.

If your car breaks down, for example, you are just as likely to need someone with specialised computer know-how as you are someone with years of experience under the hood. Which is why, of course, more and more mechanics are expanding their skill sets beyond the traditional world of spanners and oil changes.

Nowhere is this more true than in business, especially the small business sector where you are less likely to have a complete specialist team on-site to deal with your problems. Which is where we come in. At Ghost Services , we are that complete specialist team. Over 300 organisations in the Essex, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire regions trust us to handle their storage, security and support services requirements.

Cyber Security: The biggest concern of 2018?

Cyber security has been number one on web developers’ minds for years. However, business owners are only just seeing the importance of this due to the on-going issues of hacking seen since 2017.

Technology is evolving faster than ever before which is fantastic for us, of course, but also fantastic for cyber criminals. The ever-growing tech base brings ever-growing opportunities which are at risk of exploitation.

cyber security and cyber attacks

It is not only businesses that are at risk, it is also personal and customer data which are threatened with cyber attacks. Remember: if you think you are safe, you probably aren’t, so it is always best to have your systems checked by professionals in this industry.

Without the correct safeguards and anti-virus processes it is only a matter of time before you will become a victim of cybercrime. Luckily for you, companies such as Ghost Services https://www.ghostservices.co.uk/ are here to offer expert services in order to keep your business and your data safe and secure.

The Internet of Things (IoT)

You have your very own Internet of Things. Your iPad, iPhone, tablet etc. are all connected via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. IoT in simple terms refers to the number of devices which are being synced to the internet and interacting with each other.

The risk with IoT is if a hacker successfully hacks into your iPad for example, they will no doubt, already have access to information stored on your phone, laptop and any of your other devices.

TIP: Always have your Wi-Fi password protected and your network shielded by a firewall.

Can I have your name & email address please?

Another issue is that people rarely think twice about giving out their private data. By private data we don’t mean bank details, address and D.O.B (that would just be silly!), we mean data as simple as your email address. This is alerting hackers that you have an active email address just waiting to be targeted.
