All broadband is simply not the same.
Convention broadband is packaged and marketed for the "consumer market". The normal profile for this type of service is an 8Mbyte upload and a circa 500k download service. Convention consumer broadband is delivered with a user contention ratio of 50:1. This means that you are potentially sharing the service with 49 other customers with no control or understanding of what they are doing. You also have no idea however whether the "customer" has a single user or 100 users on a network and erratic network performance is common . This criteria also does not take into consideration what the line is being used for.
Ergo low performance broadband at a low price.
BT "Business Broadband" is delivered with a user contention ratio of 20:1. Over non dedicated networks "business packets" take priority over normal traffic. You still however have no control or understanding of the other traffic on the network.
Deregulation of the broadband industry however has allowed other suppliers to install their own equipment into local exchanges and offer a number of alternative business packages.
"Business Broadband" can now be delivered with download speeds of 16, 20 and 24 Mbytes and upload speed of 1, 1.3 or 2.5 Mbytes.
Some providers do not use contention ratios and focus rather on overall network performance.
Services are available with higher data "caps" ranging to "Unlimited" services.
